Glossary
- AC3
AC3 is Dolby's third generation audio coding algorithm. AC3 file is a Dolby Digital audio file.
- Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio of a two-dimensional shape is the ratio of its longer dimension to its shorter dimension.
- AVI
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. It is a special case of the RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format).
- Bookmark
A marker of a playing position in a DVD movie.
- CD
A Compact Disc (or CD) is an optical disc used to store digital data, originally developed for storing digital audio.
- DVD
DVD (also known as "Digital Versatile Disc" or "Digital Video Disc") is an optical disc storage media format that can be used for data storage, including movies with high video and sound quality. DVDR stands for DVD Recordable and DVDRW for DVD ReWriteable.
- DVD+R
A DVD+R is a once-writable optical disc with 4.7 GB (4.377 GiB) of storage capacity (more precisely, 2295104 sectors of 2048 bytes each).
- DVD-R
DVD-R is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R has a larger storage capacity than its optical predecessor, the 700 MB CD-R, typically storing 4.71 GB.
- H.263
H.263 is a provisional ITU-T standard, it is due to be published sometime in 1995/1996.
- MP3
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a popular digital audio encoding and lossy compression format, designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent audio, yet still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio to most listeners. It was invented by a team of European engineers who worked in the framework of the EUREKA 147 DAB digital radio research program, and it became an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.
- MP3Pro
MP3PRO was developed by Coding Technologies to provide enhanced compression to the MP3 system. It's an audio compression algorithm (or codec) that combines the MP3 audio format with spectral band replication compression methods. It claims to achieve transparency at lower bitrates than MP3, resulting in a file nearly half the size of standard MP3. RCA was the only company to offer portable players compatible with mp3PRO, but they have dropped support for the format.
- M4P
M4P is protected MP4. Digital right management algorithm is added into an MP4 file.
- MP4
MPEG-4 Part 14, formally, ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003, is a multimedia container format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4. It is most-commonly used to store digital audio and digital video streams, especially those defined by MPEG, but also can be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.
- MPEG
MPEG(also known as "The Moving Picture Experts Group") is a working group of ISO/IEC charged with the development of video and audio encoding standards.
- MPEG-1
MPEG-1 defines a group of Audio and Video (AV) coding and compression standards agreed upon by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group).
- MPEG-2
MPEG-2 is the designation for a group of coding and compression standards for Audio and Video (AV), agreed upon by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), and published as the ISO/IEC 13818 international standard. MPEG-2 is typically used to encode audio and video for broadcast signals, including direct broadcast satellite and Cable TV. MPEG-2, with some modifications, is also the coding format used by standard commercial DVD movies.
- Snapshot
A photograph that is taken in a short moment of opportunity.
- Subtitle
Subtitle is textual version of the dialog in films and television programs, usually displayed at the bottom of the screen.
- SVCD
SVCD stands for "Super VideoCD". A SVCD is very similiar to a VCD, it has the capacity to hold about 35-60 minutes on 74/80 min CDs of very good quality full-motion video along with up to 2 stereo audio tracks and also 4 selectable subtitles. A SVCD can be played on many standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player.
- VCD
VCD stands for "Video Compact Disc" and basically it is a CD that contains moving pictures and sound. If you're familiar with regular audio/music CDs, then you will know what a VCD looks like. A VCD has the capacity to hold up to 74/80 minutes on 650MB/700MB CDs respectively of full-motion video along with quality stereo sound.
- VOB
VOB stands for DVD Video Object. It is basically one of the core files found on DVD-Video discs and contains the actual movie data.
- Widescreen
A widescreen image is a film, computer, or television image with a wider aspect ratio than the standard Academy frame developed.
- XVid
XviD is a free and open source MPEG-4 video codec. The XviD Codec is a video encoding and decoding (playback) codec designed to compete with the popular DivX codec. XviD was created by a group of volunteer programmers after the OpenDivX source was closed in July 2001.
